October 16, 2026 GIFEC Communications Visit

On October 16, 2026, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), led by its Administrator(CEO), Mr. Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer, reaffirmed its commitment to bridging Ghana’s digital divide following the conclusion of a two-day ministerial tour of the Volta Region by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George. The tour focused on monitoring the implementation of the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), inspecting Rural Telephony Project (RTP) infrastructure and engaging key stakeholders on efforts to expand digital connectivity and skills development.

On Friday, the delegation visited the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho to discuss integrating digital skills into healthcare education, improving campus connectivity and expanding access to computing resources for teaching, learning and research. The Minister identified UHAS as an important partner in the One Million Coders Programme, emphasising the growing relevance of artificial intelligence, data analytics and other digital competencies in modern healthcare. He acknowledged the university’s concerns regarding the initial allocation of 200 laptops and indicated that additional devices could be considered based on demonstrated demand and effective utilisation.

Discussions also addressed potential improvements to campus telecommunications infrastructure, including additional cellular sites and fibre connectivity, as well as opportunities to strengthen research and computing capacity. The delegation subsequently engaged traditional authorities and opinion leaders at Adaklu-Blidokope before proceeding to the Adaklu District Assembly to discuss local development priorities. These engagements followed the first day’s activities on Thursday, 15 October, which included a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, at the Regional Coordinating Council in Ho, and visits to the Ho Community Information Centre and the Silverstone Youth ICT Lab at Agortime Ziope, both supporting digital skills development and the One Million Coders Programme.

The team also inspected a new Rural Telephony Project site at Akoefe Gadza in the Ho Central Constituency and an existing project site at Akoete in the Agortime Ziope area to assess infrastructure and connectivity in beneficiary communities. At the conclusion of the tour, both the Minister and the Administrator of GIFEC addressed the media, highlighting the importance of digital skills development, expanded telecommunications access and effective project monitoring in advancing Ghana’s digital inclusion agenda.

Through its Rural Telephony Project, Community Information Centres and support for digital skills initiatives, GIFEC continues to contribute to efforts to extend electronic communications services to underserved communities and create opportunities for more Ghanaians to participate in the digital economy. The Volta Regional Tour forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing oversight activities to assess project implementation and strengthen accountability in the delivery of digital infrastructure and skills development initiatives across the country
