On October 15, 2026, the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), led by the Administrator(CEO), Mr. Sofo Tanko Rashid-Computer, joined the Minister responsible for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George(MP), on a field visit to the Volta Region to assess the implementation of the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP) and inspect Rural Telephony Project (RTP) sites as part of efforts to strengthen digital inclusion and expand access to electronic communications services.
The first day of the visit featured engagements with regional authorities and traditional leaders, alongside inspections of digital skills training centres and rural telecommunications infrastructure across selected communities. The delegation began its engagements in Ho with a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council. Discussions focused on regional development priorities and collaborative efforts to expand digital connectivity, improve access to technology and create opportunities for young people through digital skills development
The Minister and the GIFEC Administrator(CEO) also paid courtesy calls on chiefs of some of the communities visited, acknowledging the important role of traditional authorities in community development and the successful implementation of government-led digital inclusion initiatives. The engagements provided an opportunity to interact with local leadership and strengthen stakeholder collaboration in support of improved connectivity and access to digital opportunities. The delegation subsequently visited the Ho Community Information Centre (CIC), which serves as a centre for the One Million Coders Programme. The team assessed the facility's operations and its contribution to digital skills development, with emphasis on providing young people with access to practical ICT training and the competencies required to participate in Ghana's growing digital economy
As part of the infrastructure monitoring exercise, the Minister and the GIFEC Administrator inspected a new Rural Telephony Project site at Akoefe Gadza in the Ho Central Constituency. The inspection provided an opportunity to assess the progress of infrastructure development and efforts to extend telecommunications coverage to underserved communities. The Rural Telephony Project remains a key component of GIFEC's mandate to bridge the digital divide by extending electronic communications services to communities where access to reliable network connectivity is limited. The field inspection forms part of broader monitoring efforts to establish the status of project implementation and ensure that investments in telecommunications infrastructure deliver the intended benefits to beneficiary communities
In the afternoon, the delegation visited the Silverstone Youth ICT Lab at Agortime Ziope, another centre supporting the One Million Coders Programme. The engagement focused on the facility's role in equipping young people with relevant digital competencies to improve their prospects for employment, entrepreneurship and participation in the digital economy. The day's activities concluded with an inspection of the old Rural Telephony Project site at Akoete in the Agortime Ziope area. The visit provided a further opportunity to examine the existing infrastructure and assess connectivity in the beneficiary community. The engagements underscored the importance of effective project monitoring, accountability and collaboration among government institutions, local authorities and traditional leaders in ensuring that investments in digital infrastructure and skills development translate into tangible benefits for citizens. Through its Rural Telephony Project, Community Information Centres and support for digital skills development, GIFEC continues to advance efforts to expand telecommunications access, strengthen digital literacy and promote inclusive participation in Ghana's digital economy. The Volta Regional field visit forms part of the Ministry's ongoing oversight activities to assess project implementation, verify progress on the ground and ensure that digital inclusion initiatives respond to the needs of communities across the country.
