GIFEC, Partners Visit and Inspect Ashaiman DTC, Admonish Girls to Take up Transformative roles.
The Deputy Administrator of Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, Mrs. Eva Andoh-Poku has urged young girls to utilise their peculiar skills obtained at the training of digital skills acquisition, as a tool for adding up to the economy’s buoyancy.
According to Deputy Administrator, imbibing in girls the needed digital skills would serve as a viable alternative for bridging the gap between gender disparities among girls in ICT.
She made these assertions while giving remarks at the Ashaiman Digital Transformation Centre, Accra and highlighting on the need for investing in the training of girl child’s literacy in ICT.
Mrs. Andoh Poku advised the girls who exhibited their digital prowess through some coding session that, the future is a digitally dominant space and it was prudent for these girls to constantly practice whatever they have been taught as part of the training.
GIFEC, together with its partners including, International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) and Cisco is introducing the Digital Transformation Centres (DTC), and some High Profiled dignitaries partook in the inspection dubbed “Inspection of Coding for Girls Project”.
The project, which forms part of a broader goal of building an inclusive digital society where lack of digital skills should not be a barrier to participation in the digital economy, have trained several girls in ICT.
Project implementing partners, who visited and inspected the training, expressed happiness to GIFEC for being a reliable partner to widening the digital training space in Ghana.
Administrator of GIFEC, Mr. Prince Sefah mentioned that, through the unprecedented support of our government to bridge the Digital Divide, GIFEC is deploying telecommunication infrastructure to over 2016 through our flagship Rural Telephony and Digital Inclusion Project, which seeks to provide telephony and data connectivity to over 3 more million Citizens across the country.
Highlighting on some feats chalked by GIFEC, Mr. Sefah said it has enabled the teaching and learning ICT in over 1,000 schools across the country through its Schools Connectivity Project which provides ICT resources like computers and accessories to these schools.
He underscored that, skills development is a crucial part of digital inclusion and digitalisation, and this empowers individuals to take advantage of opportunities available in the ICT eco-space and maximise productivity.
The Administrator explained that the project involves training of beneficiaries, spanning persons in the formal and informal sectors including students, teachers, training for women and girls, youth, and the marginalised in communities such as head porters, school dropouts and school leavers, in specially designed CISCO certified courses.
Mr. Sefah thanked the partners for the contribution and support to GIFEC in the vigorous pursuit of its huge mandate of leading the charge to achieve Universal Access to Digitalisation.
Deputy Director General, Elisabeth Schwabe-Hansen Section for Horn of Africa and West Africa Section for Horn of Africa and West Africa commended GIFEC for the great partnership and providing the needed digital skills to girls in Ghana.
She observed that, acquisition of digital skills would be able to serve as a catalyst to drive poverty in the African sub-region.
